Harry McCracken leaving to start a new site
Monday, May 12th, 2008 - 4:52PM
So Harry McCracken is leaving PC World on June 2nd to start his own tech site. The man’s a titan in our industry, I can’t wait to check out what he’s got cooking — good luck, Harry!
P.S. -And no, the EIC gig I referenced the other day wasn’t this, so there you go.

I can only scratch my head and wonder what kind of epic demonry this man is going to unleash unto the world…
Also, great use of the word titan.

Ryan, do you see this as indicative of shift away from print (if there IS such a shift) that was discussed on TWIT a while back? Is he jumping off a sinking ship?

PC World is hardly sinking, and some print — the stuff that really leverages the advantages of the medium — will remain indefinitely. In-depth, long-form editorial hasn’t really transitioned to the web, barring a select few sites (Slate comes to mind), but I think Harry’s doing the smart thing for him: trying something new and making it his own.

“PC World… really leverages the advantages of the medium..”
Based on that, will we ever see an Engadget print magazine? No so much just electronic devices, but more a lifestyle magazine, people first, gadgets in action ( or peril? ) second. It could be what Rolling Stone used to be.

Not sure there’s any need — we’ve managed to leverage OUR medium very well. I think the mistake most brands make is they see a modicum of success and believe they can parlay it horizontally. I’d rather we just spend our time and resources continuing to better Engadget’s online presence.

As much as I would love an Engadget Magazine, I think it is a good move to stay out of that field. But, one lateral expansion that really could be worth the effort is to crank up the Engadget Podcast again, but maybe in a different format. Possibly TWIT-like with guests or maybe interviews with tech luminaries. I loved the casualness of you and Peter just covering the stories, but I could really see a synergy with a high-profile, upscale podcast, either audio or video. You are good at that type of thing and have the clout to bring in some solid guests. And, I could suggest a very conveniently located and well-known co-host with experience in such things . . . (you KNOW you guys have talked about it!).
