flOw is the PS3’s killer app right now

flOw

I’ve played a bit of Wii — namely Trauma Center — in the past few weeks but only the Xbox 360 has been able to keep my attention. That is, until flOw. Based on Jenova Chen’s MFA thesis called Flow in Games, the original flash (which I really enjoyed playing last year) has been adapted into what may be the best, most original gameplay experience on the PS3 right now. Think Snake meets Spore. Basically you play a growing, polymorphic sea bug swimming into the depths of the deep ocean in search of food — which in 1080p looks absolutely astounding. It’s one of those titles that reminds me of why I used to love games so much back in the day.

  1. Seconded - Fl0w is seriously the only game on the PS3 that makes me want to buy it. Geometry Wars was an equally great factor in my Xbox 360 purchase. Wii Sports is the Wii’s equivalent.

Developers are insane: they’re chasing their tails by going for better graphics and eye candy. The real money is in new gameplay concepts.

  2. Definitely. Just like Geometry Wars was the first big 360 hit and Wii Sports defined that console, I think flOw will help the PS3 find its place.

  3. Exactly my thoughts Ryan. Perfect analogy with Geometry Wars and Wii Sports. I found myself smiling a lot while playing this.
