David Bowie, Klaus Nomi, and Iggy Pop in Venture Brothers

Venture Brothers Bowie

Even ignoring the fact that the Venture Brothers was created by those behind The Tick cartoon (one of my all time favorites), namely Jackson Publick, and the numerous insider references the show makes to everything from Adam and the Ants to The Damned, it takes a certain je ne sais quoi for a superhero comedy to make use of a ragged Iggy Pop and siren-like Klaus Nomi as villains embroiled with a shape-shifting (”changing” if you will) David Bowie, aka The Sovereign (above). If you didn’t have a chance to catch the Venture Brothers season 2 finale Showdown at Cremation Creek (part II), I highly suggest you watch for it on Adult Swim reruns. It’s easily the best half hour of animation in recent memory.

  1. I didn’t get the Klaus Nomi reference but thanks to a wikipedian with a Venture Bros. hardon I was able to find him easily http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Nomi Check out the trivia. Is this really needed: “Tragically, in the setting, AIDS has not yet been cured…”

  2. Um… wasn’t The Tick (in comic book, cartoon, and live action forms) created by Ben Edlund? Who, conicidenatally, went on to write and produce several episodes of Firefly.

In any case, I’ll be watching the VB finale shortly.

  3. Yeah, Jackson certainly did not create The Tick — but he did write some of the cartoon eps and work on the series, something that really shines through in VB.

  4. There’s also an episode in which the Monarch finds a picture of himself making out with Lydia Lunch and Stiv Bators published in Dr. Girlfriend’s autobiography. Thought that was pretty silly. But I think my jaw still dropped to the floor when I saw Klaus Nomi and the Ig kill David Bowie.
